Discover the Legacy of Date Masamune –
A Visionary Leader of
Samurai Japan
A Visionary Leader of
Samurai Japan

Often hailed as the “One-Eyed Dragon,” Date Masamune remains one of Japan’s most admired samurai warlords—especially among the people of Sendai, the city he founded and cultivated. A brilliant strategist, charismatic leader, and refined patron of the arts, Masamune possessed the talents and ambition to unite Japan. However, he was born thirty years too late. By the time he rose to power, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu had already emerged as dominant figures in the pursuit of national unification.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi
Tokugawa Ieyasu

Recognizing the tides of history, Masamune made a remarkable decision. Rather than plunge the country back into war, he chose to support Tokugawa Ieyasu’s rule, prioritizing peace and stability over personal ambition. He then turned his focus to the development of Sendai, laying the foundation for a prosperous and culturally rich domain in Japan’s northeast.

Far more than a warrior, Date Masamune was a true Renaissance figure—an accomplished calligrapher, poet, tea master, and above all, a devoted patron of Noh theater. Thanks to his legacy, Sendai has long stood as a cultural capital of the region, rivaling even Kyoto in its refinement.
To honor this remarkable legacy, and in conjunction with the upcoming symposium held in Sendai, we are proud to offer a special historical tour tracing the footsteps of Date Masamune. Join us as we explore the places, stories, and spirit of one of Japan’s most fascinating figures.

Join us on a special 3-day tour following the legacy of Date Masamune—one of Japan’s most brilliant and respected samurai lords. Known for his strategic genius and refined taste in culture, Masamune shaped the city of Sendai not only as a military stronghold but also as a vibrant center of arts and tradition.
This tour is designed to immerse you in both the history and the living cultural heritage that Date Masamune left behind.
The highlight of the post-tour is none other than Nikkō Tōshō-gū—the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the very man whose rise to power led Date Masamune to abandon his own pursuit of unifying Japan. Enshrined here as a deity, Ieyasu is honored for his immense achievements: laying the foundation for over 300 years of peace during the Edo period and fostering the flourishing of Japanese culture as we know it today.

When you behold the opulent splendor of Nikkō Tōshō-gū, we hope you will also reflect on the greatness of Date Masamune, the trusted ally of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the role he played in supporting this remarkable legacy.
